“To Wesley and to Margaret the bright young face of Elnora, with its pink tints, its heavy dark brows, its bright blue-gray eyes, and its frame of curling reddish-brown hair was the sweetest sight on earth, and at that instant Elnora was radiant.” –A Girl of the Limberlost, Gene Stratton-Porter
Nothing like a warm day for a quick rummage through my books. A dear friend gave me this beautiful old edition by Gene Stratton-Porter for my birthday last year. This is truly one of the best books ever. I read it as an adult and was spellbound by the writing, the plot and characters, and especially the Limberlost swamp itself.
Stratton-Porter is an incredible writer. I can only describe her voice as one that gallops. She carries you along with the story so swiftly that you get swept up immediately in the cares and concerns of her characters. I love all of her books, but this one really is a perfect kindred spirit treasure.
If you haven’t read it, put this on your reading list because you are in for a treat. I guarantee you’ll fall for Elnora right away and be cheering for her success all the way through to the end.
